When it comes to Secret Santa, second hand is your secret weapon

So your work Christmas lunch is booked. You’ve paid your £10 deposit. Picked your options from the set menu (only to bitterly regret your choices later on). Then those immortal words are spoken…
“Ooh we should do Secret Santa!” your Christmas do organiser suggests, to general approval.
Secret Santa is a lot of fun, but it’s not uncommon to find yourself desperately trying to come up with an original, witty gift idea with a £5 budget at the eleventh hour.

And if you’re trying to be a little more environmentally conscious this Christmas, how do you join in without buying stuff that seems destined for landfill?
This is where we think your local Oxfam shop can help – and to test our theory we’ve hand-picked a few second hand gems under a fiver, that could make cracking Secret Santa gifts.

Star Wars Top Trumps

Top Trumps Star Wars

To the person who has shared every Star Wars fan theory going since The Rise Of Skywalker trailer dropped – give a gift from a galaxy far, far away (or our shop in Ulverston).

Choirboys singing

Carols from King’s College on vinyl

This is possibly one for your Secret Santa organiser. They’ll love the choir of King’s College Cambridge playing in the background, as they open presents on Christmas morning.

Vintage green and gold scarf

Your style conscious co-worker will love this vintage 1970s scarf, found in the Oxfam shop in Portishead.

Vintage teapot

English tea pot

Bring a little refinement to their daily caffeine fix with a cute, decorative teapot like this.

Vintage dominoes set

This classic dominoes set turned up at the Oxfam shop in Carlisle. This would make a special, unique Secret Santa gift for anyone, and you could even get a game going at your Xmas lunch table.

Super Seeds gift card

Super Seeds gift card

OK, this one isn’t second hand, but Oxfam Unwrapped charity gift cards are another eco-conscious, low waste way to give – and they make a big difference in people’s lives. For a fiver, you can get a Super Seeds charity gift card, which provides seeds, tools and training for farmers to help them grow more crops and earn more income. The person who nurtures those pot plants on their desk every day will love it.

Even if you still end up panic buying a Secret Santa gift that’s a bit wrong – you can feel good knowing that your £5 spend is helping people to overcome poverty.
And if your own Secret Santa gift isn’t everything you’d hoped for – save it from landfill and send it our way! It’ll make a great stocking filler for someone out there, and you’ll be helping people to beat poverty all over again.
At the time of writing, all of the Secret Santa finds listed above were available in our shops, so they may very well have sold since. But you never know what might turn up in your local Oxfam shop. That’s all part of the fun.

If you decide to take our second hand Secret Santa challenge, we’d love to see what you find. Share your gift on Instagram with our hashtag #FoundInOxfam
